In 1982, while working as an art teacher in a junior high school in the South Bronx, Tim Rollins founded an alternative after-school program for students with learning difficulties. The collaboration between Rollins and the students is called Kids of Survival (K.O.S.) in recognition of the skills acquired through participation in the workshop, which have helped them to better navigate the social, cultural, and political factions that make up their world. Since their partnership began in 1982, an international audience in major museums and galleries has viewed the work of Tim Rollins and K.O.S. worldwide.

In addition to his work with Kids of Survival (K.O.S), Tim is a senior instructor at the School of Visual Arts in NYC and is also Visiting Professor of Art, Literature and Music at the Martha Washington Elementary in Philadelphia, Pa sponsored by The Centre for the Prevention of School Violence at Drexel University, Philadelphia.

Today Tim Rollins tells the story of over twenty-five years of making collaborative artworks with artistically gifted but learning disabled and at-risk youth, first in the South Bronx community in New York City and more recently on an international scale in distressed neighborhoods throughout the world. Tim will discuss the theoretical and practical origins of our community-based fine arts studio called The Art and Knowledge Workshop where the artist team K.O.S.create collaborative paintings and works on paper for exhibition in museums and galleries worldwide. He will also be presenting images representing the wide range of artworks created by his group, all inspired by classics of world literature and music.
