Title: Traditions Meet
Artform: Film and Digital Media, Music, Song and Dance
Organisation:
Four voluntary groups that included, a highland dance group, an irish dance group, a brass music group and a pipes and drums group

Synopsis: Members of the Sollus highland dancers, the Mc Kinney Academy of Irish Dance, Bready Pipes and Drums and St Joseph’s brass band worked with a producer to develop some performance pieces in dance and music that provided the context for the young people to make a documented film. The pieces developed were filmed around a number of locations and tourist attractions in the Derry area. The participants had the opportunity to learn about film making, sound and lighting, graphic design, copyright, editing etc. The project gave the participants the opportunity to examine each others cultural identity and to learn about the processes involved in the production of a DVD. The DVD is a valuable educational tool that can be used by schools and groups to raise awareness of cultural traditions and in particular show two cultures coming together for a unique project. It can be used as a stimulus for work on community relations and citizenship.
